Machine Guard Optical Window — PMMA

Application

Machine guard windows protect operators from coolant spray, chip ejection, and laser scatter. PMMA (acrylic) is the standard material — half the weight of glass, 17× the impact resistance, and easily fabricated to custom shapes.

Spec for CNC Machining Centers

• 10 – 15 mm thick cast PMMA
• Polished edges (no notch initiation for impact)
• Anti-scratch hard coat optional (raises cost ~30 %)
• Standard size 800 × 600 mm; custom shapes to drawing

Spec for Laser Cutter Enclosures

• Use orange-tinted PMMA (blocks 532-808 nm laser wavelengths) — standard clear PMMA does NOT block laser radiation
• Thickness per laser power: 6 mm for ≤30 W; 10 mm for ≤100 W; 12-15 mm for higher
• Always seal edge with metal frame or extrusion

Limitations

PMMA is NOT suitable for hot-chip applications (e.g. machining titanium where chips can hit 400 °C). For those use polycarbonate or tempered glass. PMMA is also attacked by chlorinated solvents and ketones — wipe down with isopropanol only.
